Logic Functions and Equations: Examples and Exercises

The field of binary Logics has two main areas of application, the Digital Design of Circuits (related to Electrical Engineering) and Propositional Logics (related to Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, Complexity etc.). In both cases it is quite possible to teach the theoretical foundations and to do some exercises, but in both cases the examples that can be done in class and by hand are far away from examples that are relevant for practical problems. Therefore a software package called XBOOLE Monitor will be made available (downloadable, without additional fees), and the exercises given in Logic Functions and Equations can be solved by using this software package – in this way it is possible to solve a lot of relevant problems and to study the solutions based on this software.

z/VM and Linux on IBM System z The Virtualization Cookbook for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2

This IBM Redbooks publication describes how to roll your own Linux virtual servers on IBM System z hardware under z/VM. This edition applies to Version 5, Release 4, Modification 0 of z/VM (product number 5741-A05) and Version 5, Release 2 of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. With a z/VM and Linux infrastructure, you can reduce the time between deciding on the acquisition of new servers and then implementing them because new servers can be deployed in a matter of minutes. This powerful build and clone capability can enable you to launch new products and services without the exhaustive planning, purchasing, installing and configuring of new hardware and software that can be associated with conventional discrete hardware servers. Development groups that need test environments built and rebuilt rapidly to enable them to efficiently deliver their projects, while handling change management in the process, can also benefit from this unique advantage. The publication adopts a cookbook format that provides you with a concise, repeatable set of procedures for installing and configuring z/VM in a logical partition (LPAR), and then installing and customizing Linux. To implement these instructions, you need an IBM System z logical partition with associated resources, z/VM 5.4 media, and a Linux distribution. This book assumes that you have a general familiarity with System z technology and terminology. It does not assume an in-depth understanding of z/VM and Linux. It is written for those who want to get a quick start with z/VM and Linux on the mainframe.

The Prefrontal Cortex

Review
"Joaquin Fuster is one of the leading scientists in the field of cognitive neuroscience. He is famous not only for his discovery of 'memory cells' in the frontal lobe of the monkey, but also for his excellent books. Among them the most famous and influential is 'The Prefrontal Cortex'. I remember the first edition of it back in 1980. It was a mere intellectual pleasure reading it. The book reviewed an amazing amount of data from anatomy, ontogeny, and physiology to the effect of lesions on innate and conditioned behavior and synthesized them in a coherent theory. In this new completely re-written edition of the book, Fuster has been able to repeat the enterprise. In spite of the enormous amount of new data, many coming from the rather messy field of brain imaging, he has been able to review them and put them in a clear theoretical frame. I am sure the new generation of neuroscientists will be influenced by this book in the same way as I was more than 20 years ago and will receive, by reading it, the same intellectual pleasure." - Giacomo Rizzolatti, Professor of Human Physiology, Department of Neuroscience, Section of Physiology, University of Parma, Italy "Once again, Dr. Fuster, the world's pre-eminent expert on the frontal lobes, has delivered an instant classic that should be read by everyone interested in understanding the link between brain and behavior." - Mark D'Esposito, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology, Director, Henry H. Wheeler Jr. Brain Imaging Center, University of California, Berkeley, USA "The frontal lobe serves the highest cognitive functions of the brain, including symbolic representation of the world, decision making, and planning for the future. Arguably, the enormous development of these functions distinguishes the human from other species. Joaquin Fuster has devoted his life to studying the many complex roles of the frontal cortex in behavior and cognition. This book is the product of his efforts to make these issues comprehensible in an exciting and fast-growing field. Even it you possess earlier editions of his book you should also have this one to stay informed about the brain structure that makes us human. For that, this vastly updated edition is a must-have, whether you are a specialist or not." - Pasko Rakic, Chairman, Department of Neurobiology, and Director, Kavli Institute for Neuroscience, Yale Medical School, USA "The Prefrontal Cortex is a classic, and the classic has just been updated, expanded and thought anew, with the depth and wisdom that characterize Fuster's work. As before, this is an indispensable volume for neuroscientists." - Antonio Damasio, Dornsife Professor of Neuroscience and Director, Brain and Creativity Institute, University of Southern California, USA "The frontal lobes are central to cognitive neuroscience. The revision of this important volume provides the crucial background needed to grasp their role. In a final chapter Fuster brings together all that is known by emphasizing the temporal course of brain networks in a way which serves to illuminate action, consciousness and free will." - Michael I. Posner, Professor, Department of Psychology, Institute of Cognitive and Decision Sciences, University of Oregon, USA "The Prefrontal Cortex is not only a classic, but also an essential book for anyone interested in higher brain function. One might think there's nothing left to say but Fuster proves that wrong. The fourth edition is fresh and vibrant, and itself essential, destined to be a classic in its own right." - Joseph LeDoux, University Professor, New York University, USA, and author of The Emotional Brain and Synaptic Self "A classic that has graced the library of many of us since its first edition appeared 28 years ago now returns, splendidly updated. As a result this book will continue to be the go-to reference on the prefrontal cortex as we strive to understand more fully its critical role in brain function." - Marcus E. Raichle, Professor of Radiology and Neurology, Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, USA "This is a superb, fresh, in-depth, review of one of the most complex and fascinating topics in cognitive neuroscience. In this, the latest edition of his excellent book, Fuster further substantiates the general proposition that the prefrontal cortex serves the organization of goal-directed actions in the most human of all action domains. Based on a wealth of recent empirical evidence, he places the temporal integrative functions of the frontal lobe-including working memory and planning--at the summit of the perception-action cycle. There, with access to myriad signals from the internal and external milieus, the prefrontal cortex attends to the orderly pursuit of rational, linguistic, and social goals. It is a must read for all interested in neuroscience" - Richard Thompson, William M. Keck Chair in Biological Sciences and Professor of Psychology and Biological Sciences, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA

Deploying a Grid Solution With the IBM Infosphere Information Server

The IBM InfoSphere Information Server and the IBM Blade/GRID offering is a revolutionary new software/hardware platform (leveraging Linux on Intel) that helps organizations derive more value from the complex heterogeneous information spread across their systems. It enables organizations to integrate disparate data and deliver trusted information wherever and whenever needed, in line and in context, to specific people, applications, and processes.
This IBM Redbooks publication describes a scenario for migrating an existing InfoSphere Information Server parallel framework implementation on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 platform to a high availability grid environment involving four machines comprising one conductor node and three compute nodes. The high availability environment involves one of the three compute nodes serving as a standby conductor node that takes over the conductor role when the original conductor fails. The steps involved in migrating the existing infrastructure to the high availability grid infrastructure and enabling existing IBM WebSphere DataStage, IBM WebSphere QualityStage, and IBM WebSphere Information Analyzer jobs to exploit the grid environment are described here.

Who Controls the Internet?: Illusions of a Borderless World

Is the Internet truly "flattening" the modern world? Will national boundaries crumble beneath the ever-increasing volume of Internet traffic? Goldsmith and Wu, both professors of law (Goldsmith at Harvard, Wu at Columbia), think not, and they present an impressive array of evidence in their favor. The authors argue national governments will continue to maintain their sovereignty in the age of the Internet, largely because of economics: e-businesses-even giants such as Yahoo, Google and eBay-need governmental support in order to function. When Yahoo, an American company, was tried in French court for facilitating the auctioning of Nazi paraphernalia in violation of French law, the company was eventually forced to comply with local laws or risk losing the ability to operate in France. As eBay grew into an Internet powerhouse, its "feedback" system could not keep up with cunning con artists, so it hired hundreds of fraud prevention specialists (known as "eBay cops"). Goldsmith and Wu begin with an overview of the Internet's early days, replete with anecdotes and key historical chapters that will be unknown to many readers, but their book quickly introduces its main contention: that existing international law has the power to control the Internet, a conclusion web pundits, cyberlaw specialists and courts across the globe will inevitably challenge. Wu's and Goldsmith's account of the power struggle between the Utopian roots of the Internet and the hegemony of national governments is a timely chronicle of a history still very much in the works.

Basics of Applied Stochastic Processes

Stochastic processes are mathematical models of random phenomena that evolve according to prescribed dynamics. Processes commonly used in applications are Markov chains in discrete and continuous time, renewal and regenerative processes, Poisson processes, and Brownian motion. This volume gives an in-depth description of the structure and basic properties of these stochastic processes. A main focus is on equilibrium distributions, strong laws of large numbers, and ordinary and functional central limit theorems for cost and performance parameters. Although these results differ for various processes, they have a common trait of being limit theorems for processes with regenerative increments. Extensive examples and exercises show how to formulate stochastic models of systems as functions of a system’s data and dynamics, and how to represent and analyze cost and performance measures. Topics include stochastic networks, spatial and space-time Poisson processes, queueing, reversible processes, simulation, Brownian approximations, and varied Markovian models.

The technical level of the volume is between that of introductory texts that focus on highlights of applied stochastic processes, and advanced texts that focus on theoretical aspects of processes.

Energy and Environmental Challenges to Security

The thirst for energy and the need to manage environmental impacts arising from the carbon economy are urgent issues facing this and future generations. The environment and security nexus provide an essential perspective for meeting energy and other challenges to security arising from climate change, conflicts, and economic transition. As Norman Myers succinctly pointed out, wars have already been fought over water and energy; and deforestation, soil erosion, desertification, over-fishing, and a host of other environmental problems are linked with conflict everywhere. Yet the capacity of humans to reach across boundaries and cooperate on the environment also gives us hope that solutions to environment and security problems can be found.

This volume presents the outcome of a unique meeting that took place in November 2007 in the Hungarian Parliament, when scientists from NATO member and partner countries met with members of parliament from two committees of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Penetrating contributions in this volume address an array of issues integral to energy, the environment and security, including environmental refugees, the viability of nuclear power, the biofuels misstep, and geopolitical aspects of global energy security, among others - issues that will be with us for many years to come.

Encyclopedia of Paleoclimatology and Ancient Environments

Concern exists over human-generated increases in atmospheric greenhouse gases and their potential consequences to society. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2007 finds that global temperatures have increased by 0.8ºC since 1850 and that climate warming is now “unequivocal”. While the human imprint is becoming increasingly apparent, Earth’s climate has shifted dramatically and frequently during the last few million years, alternating between ice ages, when vast glaciers covered Northern Europe and much of North America, and interglacials—warm periods much like today. Farther back in geologic time, climates have differed even more from the present. Thus, to fully understand the unusual changes of the 20th century and possible future trends, these must be placed in a longer-term context extending beyond the period of instrumental records.

The Encyclopedia of Paleoclimatology and Ancient Environments, a companion volume to the recently-published Encyclopedia of World Climatology, provides the reader with an entry point to the rapidly expanding field of paleoclimatology—the study of climates of the past. Highly interdisciplinary in nature, paleoclimatology integrates information from a broad array of disciplines in the geosciences, ranging from stratigraphy, geomorphology, glaciology, paleoecology, paleobotany to geochemistry and geophysics, among others. The encyclopedia offers 230 informative articles written by over 200 well known international experts on numerous subjects, ranging from classical geological evidence to the latest research. The volume is abundantly illustrated with line-drawings, black-white and color photographs. Articles are arranged alphabetically, with extensive bibliographies and cross-references.

Analytical Methods in Fuzzy Modeling and Control

This book is focused on mathematical analysis and rigorous design methods for fuzzy control systems based on Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models, sometimes called Takagi-Sugeno-Kang models. The author presents a rather general analytical theory of exact fuzzy modeling and control of continuous and discrete-time dynamical systems. The main attention is paid to usability of the results for the control and computer engineering community and therefore simple and easy for linguistic interpretation knowledge-bases have been used. The approach is based on the author’s theorems concerning equivalence between widely used Takagi-Sugeno systems and some class of multivariate polynomials. It combines the advantages of fuzzy system theory and classical control theory. Classical control theory can be applied to modeling of dynamical plants and the controllers. They are all equivalent to the set of Takagi-Sugeno type fuzzy rules. The approach combines the best of fuzzy and conventional control theory. It enables linguistic interpretability (also called transparency) of both the plant model and the controller. In the case of linear systems and some class of nonlinear systems, the engineer can in many cases directly apply well-known classical tools from the control theory both for analysis, and the design of the closed-loop fuzzy control systems. Therefore the main objective of the book is to establish comprehensive and unified analytical foundations for fuzzy modeling using Takagi-Sugeno rule scheme and their applications for fuzzy control, identification of some class of nonlinear dynamical processes and classification problem solver design.

AdvancED ActionScript 3.0 Animation

This book is a compilation of advanced ActionScript 3.0 animation techniques for any user creating games, user interaction, or motion control with ActionScript. It's a compilation of topics that follow on from the author's earlier book, Foundation ActionScript 3.0 Animation: Making Things Move, and things that became possible in the most recent version of Flash: Flash Player 10. This book covers a diverse selection of topics that don't necessarily lead one into the other. You don't need to start with Chapter 1 and read it cover to cover. Just start with any chapter that looks interesting and jump around as you see fit. In this book, you'll find chapters on advanced collision detection, artificial intelligence and steering behaviors, isometric projection, using the camera and microphone for input, 3D, and much, much more.

The book is also more experimental in nature. The techniques shown here might not be the best way to do things, but they should work well and get you started in your own efforts to achieve a perfect implementation. In fact, many of the chapters can be seen as introductions to very complex topics that could fill a whole book by themselves. Many of these subjects have been extensively covered elsewhere, but not necessarily targeted for Flash or ActionScript 3.0. So it took a fair amount of work to pull the data together and get it all working and explain it all clearly in ActionScript. This book will inspire you to find out about subjects that you might not have considered before, acting as a springboard into your own research into the possibilities of ActionScript 3.0.
In this book, you'll learn how to:

* Leverage Flash 10 3D, the new drawing API commands, and Pixel Bender
* Create isometric worlds for games
* Construct powerful artificial intelligence routines including pathfinding, steering, and flocking behaviors
* Use numerical integration for real world physics effects

Market-Consistent Actuarial Valuation

It is a challenging task to read the balance sheet of an insurance company.

This derives from the fact that different positions are often measured by different yardsticks. Assets, for example, are mostly valued at market prices whereas liabilities are often measured by established actuarial methods.

Market-Consistent Actuarial Valuation presents powerful methods to measure liabilities and assets in the same way. The mathematical framework that leads to market-consistent values for insurance liabilities is explained in detail by the authors. Topics covered are Stochastic discounting, Valuation portfolio in life and non-life insurance, Asset and liability management, Financial risks, Insurance technical risks, and Solvency.

Generalized Linear Models for Insurance Data

This is the only book actuaries need to understand generalized linear models (GLMs) for insurance applications. GLMs are used in the insurance industry to support critical decisions. Until now, no text has introduced GLMs in this context or addressed the problems specific to insurance data. Using insurance data sets, this practical, rigorous book treats GLMs, covers all standard exponential family distributions, extends the methodology to correlated data structures, and discusses recent developments which go beyond the GLM. The issues in the book are specific to insurance data, such as model selection in the presence of large data sets and the handling of varying exposure times. Exercises and data-based practicals help readers to consolidate their skills, with solutions and data sets given on the companion website. Although the book is package-independent, SAS code and output examples feature in an appendix and on the website. In addition, R code and output for all the examples are provided on the website.

Foundation Silverlight 2 Animation

* See the power of Silverlight in action
* Learn the building blocks of animation in Silverlight 2
* Includes over 180 example Silverlight projects

Silverlight is a phenomenally powerful animation tool, but few people know how to unlock its potential. Foundation Silverlight 2 Animation gives you the keys to all of that power.

It covers the basics of animation—that is, Silverlight's storyboards and animations, which are used to provide interactivity to Silverlight applications. You'll take an in-depth look at double, point, and color animations. You'll also learn the difference between linear, spline, and discrete keyframes, and how they affect your objects as they move.

But it doesn't stop there. You'll go well beyond those simple timeline-based animations and learn how to create purely code-based animations. You'll use vectors to make objects move and bounce off boundaries and each other. You'll explore particle systems, kinematics, and collisions. You'll also learn how to use trigonometry to animate objects and simulate 3D motion in a 2D environment. The essential trigonometry required to create complex motion is simplified and explained through a series of fascinating and fun examples that can be incorporated into your own applications, games, and experiments.

Whether you're already familiar with Silverlight and you want to learn how to open it up, a Flash developer interested in expanding your skill set, or a web developer looking to take the next step into rich interactive application development, this book will bring you up to speed on Silverlight 2 and show you what it can do. From techniques for creating frame-based animations to learning how to simulate 3D in a 2D environment, there is something here to satisfy anyone's appetite for animation and interactivity.
In this book, you'll learn how to:

* Break free from the timeline and animate objects using code
* Add interactivity between objects through collision detection and reaction
* Implement forward and inverse kinematic chains to create lifelike motion
* Build particle systems and apply gravity to particles to create fountains and explosions
* Implement a virtual reality object viewer for simulating 3D object
