CCNA Practical Studies

Description

The only Cisco Systems®-approved practical lab companion for the classroom for associate-level CCNA network support courses and for courses in Cisco® networking.

CCNA Practical Studies offers students a means to gain practical networking experience and is a resource for the instructors to use in the classroom and the lab environment. This book provides students and teachers with numerous lab examples that cover the entire range of CCNA topics. Each chapter tackles a major subject area, such as router configuration, routing protocols, bridging and switching, ISDN, access lists, IPX, and more. Each subject presents a mini-lab, walking the student through the lab scenario and explaining in detail the commands used, why the authors chose the specific commands, and the resulting configurations. Comprehensive configuration and troubleshooting labs are added to the end of the book, allowing students to understand how routing technologies interact. This step-by-step lab scenario approach is designed to teach them how to apply the knowledge they are acquiring in the process of becoming a CCNA. Since the application of knowledge is just as important as acquiring the foundation concepts, this book will be an invaluable study aid for students learning basic networking concepts and for those students taking courses preparing them for acquiring a CCNA accreditation. These scenarios can be used on home or school-based networking labs, networking simulation software products, remote-accessible networking labs or other networking environment simulation options. CCNA Practical Studies also shows the user how to set up these home or school-based labs and how to acquire the equipment.

CCNA Certification Kit: (Exam 640-802) (Book & CD Rom)

Product details

  • Paperback: 740 pages
  • Publisher: John Wiley & Sons; 5th Edition edition (4 Jan 2008)
  • Language English
  • ISBN-10: 0470185724
  • ISBN-13: 978-0470185728

The combination of Sybex's best-selling CCNA Study Guide and the e-trainer network simulation software mesh wonderfully. In fact, if truth be told they were always intended to be sold as one unit; the book contains a lot of rote exercises that are just jumbles of instructions if you're not sitting at a terminal, and the CD comes with practically no instructions at all. But put together in the CCNA Certification Kit, they create a force to be reckoned with.

But first, let's get what's in this little bundle of joy listed for you. The CCNA Study Guide is a densely written but comprehensive tome; the writing can be intimidating at times, but Lammle is to be commended for trying to show the reader the reasons why certain networking topics work, as opposed to just giving you lists of items to memorise. The concepts become particularly daunting during the chapters involving TCP/IP subnetting and VLAN trunking--but meticulous rereading will reward you not only with an exam-passing knowledge, but a deep understanding that will serve you well in the corporate world. There are only two slight disappointments: one, the chapter on WAN networking is a trifle light compared to the fact-packed density of the rest of the book; and two, this book is not for absolute beginners, as it skips very quickly over essential concepts such as Ethernet networking and cabling types.

A large portion of the guide consists of simple exercises to be run on Cisco routers--which is normally a problem for the CCNA student. Most people don't have access to, and cannot afford, the roughly £15000 in equipment it takes to set up a sample lab. But that's where the CCNA Virtual Lab e-trainer comes in; it's a software package that emulates a network that consists of three Cisco routers, a Catalyst 1900 switch and a couple of WAN links.

For what it does at the price, it does it well. It's not a fully fledged simulation by any means, but it does emulate most of the basic commands well enough for you to pass--and the amount of learning you'll get from the "hands on" experience is exponentially better than any amount of book learning. Tinkering around with your own setup will help you remember the oft-cryptic Cisco commands and password levels better than anything else, and the exercises given to you in the study guide will suddenly become fully fledged workshops that expand your learning.

Now there are those who have criticised the Virtual Lab for many reasons: Not all of the basic commands are adequately supported, the interface is very clunky, there are known bugs and it's useless beyond anything but the CCNA level. But there is a saying in the industry that should be well-taken here: "Close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades." Yes, there are better Cisco simulator programs. Yes, there are cheaper ones. But no other offering has the range of features and depth that you'll find at this price, and most importantly, it's enough to pass. --William Steinmetz, Amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Voice Over IPv6: Architectures for Next Generation VoIP Networks

ISBN: 075068206X 384 pages PDF 9.29 MB
Pv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is the future of internet telephony. And this book is your guide to that future.IPv6 is the replacement for the currently used IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4). IPv6 will offer increased IP addresses (full 128-bit addresses, compared to the 32-bit addresses of IPv4), enhanced security, and greater robustness. It will also be fully backwards compatible with existing IPv4 systems. These capabilities will finally make Internet telephony a viable competitor to conventional switched telephone networks. In this book, Dan Minoli clearly explains IPv6 and how telephone networks can be built on its foundations.
his is not just another IPv6 book; instead, it focuses on those aspects of IPv6 relevant to Internet telephony systems and voice networks. Minoli uses a compare/contrast approach, exploring where IPv6 is similar to IPv4 and where it differs, to let you quickly grasp the essence of IPv6 and the similarities (and differences) between current IPv4-based systems and IPv6-based systems.
If you will be designing, implementing, or maintaining the next generation of Internet telephony systems, then you need the information in this book!
*Explains the essential concepts of IPv6 and how they relate to Internet telephony
*Describes how Internet telephony systems using IPv6 are different from, and better than,
Internet telephony systems based on the older IPv4 standard.
*Discusses how to transition existing IPv4 Internet telephony systems and conventional
switched systems to IPv6-based systems.
*Extensive treatment of security issues, including IP layer encryption and authentication
methods.
* Explains connection techniques, including plug and play approaches, for equipment used in
IPv6 systems
* The first title describing how the next generation Internet protocolIPv6can be used for
Internet telephony

Cisco IOS Cookbook

Publisher: Oreilly and Associates Inc | December 2006 | ISBN: 0596527225 | 1000 Pages | 2nd Edition | CHM | English | 2MB Never has something cried out for a cookbook quite as much as Cisco's Internetwork Operating System (IOS). IOS is powerful and flexible, but also confusing and daunting. Most tasks can be accomplished in several different ways. And you don't want to spend precious time figuring out which way is best when you're trying to solve a problem quickly. That's what this cookbook is for. Fortunately, most router configuration tasks can be broken down into several more or less independent steps: you configure an interface, you configure a routing protocol, you set up backup links, you implement packet filters and other access control mechanisms. What you really need is a set of recipes that show you how to perform the most common tasks, so you can quickly come up with a good configuration for your site. And you need to know that these solutions work: you don't want to find yourself implementing a backup link at 2 A.M. because your main link is down and the backup link you set up when you installed the router wasn't quite right. Thoroughly revised and expanded, Cisco IOS Cookbook, 2nd Edition, adds sections on MPLS, Security, IPv6, and IP Mobility, and presents solutions to the most common configuration problems, including: • Configuring interfaces of many types, from serial to ATM and Frame Relay • Configuring all of the common IP routing protocols (RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP) • Configuring authentication • Configuring other services, including DHCP and NTP • Setting up backup links, and using HSRP to configure backup routers • Managing the router, including SNMP and other solutions • Using access lists to control the traffic through the router If you work with Cisco routers, you need a book like this to help you solve problems quickly and effectively. Even if you're experienced, the solutions and extensive explanations will give you new ideas and insights into router configuration. And if you're not experienced--if you've just been given responsibility for managing a network with Cisco routers--this book could be a job-saver

Professional Web Parts and Custom Controls with ASP .NET 2.0 (with Source code)

    book cover

Custom controls and Web Parts can make you more productive by enabling you to create re-usable components for your WebForms. You can package up a piece of your user interface and re-use it within your Web site or across many Web sites. But that’s only one way that these controls make you more productive. If you’ve ever had an ASP.NET control that you wished worked slightly differently, you can now create the control that you want. When you build your own custom controls and Web Parts, you can have the control do as much (or as little) as you want.

This book’s focus is on how to use Visual Studio 2005 most effectively to create your controls (although the information you need to create custom controls, user controls, and Web Parts using any text editor is also included). Visual Studio 2005 provides you with the best support for creating ASP.NET applications and creating your own controls.

The approach in this book is simple: “If you want this, code this; if you code this, you’ll get this.” Throughout the book, the emphasis is on the code that you need to create controls that you can use when building Web applications. There’s no code in here, for instance, on how to calculate the square root of every number less than 2,000. The code in this book is based on business-related applications.

This also means that this book does not provide much background on how ASP.NET works, unless it makes a difference to you when you’re writing code. If you’re familiar with how ASP.NET works “under the hood,” that knowledge will deepen your understanding of the material in this book. On the other hand, if you’ve been able to create applications without knowing that material — well, you won’t need to know it to understand the examples in this book, either.

ASP .NET 2.0 All In One Desk Reference For Dummies (with source code)

    book cover

Welcome to ASP.NET 2.0 All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies, the Wone ASP.NET programming book that’s designed to replace an entire shelf full of the dull and tedious ASP.NET books you’d otherwise have to buy. This book contains all the basic and not-so-basic information you need to know to get going with ASP.NET Web programming, including the basics of working with Visual Studio or Visual Web Developer Express, using Web controls, working with databases, and learning the basics of both C# and Visual Basic .NET.

Of course, you can (and probably should) eventually buy separate books on each of these topics. It won’t take long before your bookshelf is bulging with 10,000 or more pages of detailed information about every imaginable nuance of ASP.NET programming. But before you’re ready to tackle each of those topics in depth, you need a birds-eye picture. That’s what this book is about.

The basic idea here is that we’ve tried to wring out the 100 or so most useful pages of information on eight different ASP.NET programming topics: basic programming, Web controls, HTML, C#, Visual Basic, database programming, the .NET Framework, and advanced programming topics. Thus, here’s a nice, trim 900-or-so-page book that’s really eight 100-page books. (Well, they didn’t all come out to 100 pages each. But close!)

Expert ASP.Net 2.0 Advanced Application Design

Expert ASP.Net 2.0 Advanced Application DesignExpert ASP.NET 2.0 Advanced Application Design will help you derive maximum performance and reliability from the distributed applications you create with ASP.NET 2.0.

The book first looks at some of the non-functional requirements that impact the design of a distributed application. It then relates them to the servers and services available in the .NET 2.0 Framework. ASP.NET 2.0 is the central process for use in distributed .NET applications, and the book closely examines the ASP.NET 2.0 Framework and its hosting environment, Internet Information Server (IIS). The book looks at how ASP.NET 2.0 is used by different packages within .NET (like Web Services), and explores how it can be extended to meet your own custom requirements.

The second part of the book drills down and examines some of the common architectural challenges encountered when developing application designs. The book walks through the tiers of the .NET Framework, starting at the client level and exploring the internals of the page type, enhancements to ViewState, client script generation, and new out-of-band callbacks. At the middle tier, the book examines Web Services, Remoting, COM+, MSMQ, and mix and match communication options to suit your own requirements. This section wraps up by previewing Windows Communication Foundation, which aims to unify these technologies.

The third part of the book examines the data layer of your distributed applications. This includes enhancements to the Managed Providers in 2.0, the new transactional model, and a preview of usage guidelines for SQL Server 2005. By the book's conclusion, you will be able to select with confidence the most appropriate design elements for your purposes, elegantly connecting them, and ensuring you get the very best from the ASP.NET 2.0 Framework.

Cisco Firewall Video Mentor (Video Learning) (Video Mentor)

Cisco Firewall Video Mentor by David Hucaby published by Cisco Press (ISBN-13: 978-1-58720-198-1 / ISBN-10: 1-58720-198-4) covers various firewall configuration tasks associated with Cisco's Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) through 16 instructional videos (also referred to as Lab 1 through Lab 16). A printed, ninety (90) page booklet accompanies the DVD. The booklet is also available in PDF format on the DVD. The booklet covers all 16 labs and is consistently formatted. The booklet format for each lab contains 4 sections. The first section describes the objectives of the lab. The second section contains the steps performed in the lab to complete the objectives. The third section contains the initial configuration prior to starting the lab. The fourth section is used as a reference to the video presentation of the lab.

The author uses the Command Line Interface (CLI) to demonstrate how to configure various tasks and many times uses the Graphical User Interface (GUI) called ASDM (Adaptive Security Device Manager) to depict how one can also accomplish the same configuration task through the use of ASDM vice the CLI.

The video is presented well, typically using the upper third of the layout for reference material (i.e. - command formats, diagrams, etc.). The bottom two/thirds of the layout are used to show the terminal emulation session (i.e. - the console session of the ASA) and the ASDM interface. The author has a pleasant voice and the running audio commentary was outstanding and synchronized perfectly with the typing associated with the CLI and ASDM interfaces. I am wondering how many takes was required to get the audio synchronized with the typing that well. It truly is impressive.

The author does a tremendous job presenting the content of the video. The content is presented in a cumulative manner. All content, from rudimentary concepts, such as, exploring the CLI modes to more complex concepts, such as, Modular Policy Framework (MPF) are broken down and thoroughly explained. I found the video to be properly paced. When I did not fully grasp a concept, it was easy to back up the video and watch and listen to it again.

I really enjoyed learning about Cisco's ASA via this video method. It is a nice departure from just reading pure technical documentation. The video mentor presentation is the next best thing to having your own lab equipment. Anyone interested in learning about stateful firewall concepts and configuring the Cisco ASA will benefit greatly from watching and listening to this video.

Expert ASP.NET 2.0 Advanced Application Design - Apress

Expert ASP.NET 2.0 Advanced Application Design - Apress

Expert ASP.NET 2.0 Advanced Application Design will help you derive maximum performance and reliability from the distributed applications you create with ASP.NET 2.0.

By the books conclusion, you will be able to select with confidence the most appropriate design elements for your purposes, elegantly connecting them, and ensuring you get the very best from the ASP.NET 2.0 Framework.

Pro ASP .NET 2.0 In C# 2005 (with source code)

In this book, you’ll learn everything you need to master ASP.NET 2.0. If you’ve programmed with a previous version of ASP.NET, you’ll sail through the basics and quickly begin learning about the exciting new features in version 2.0. If you’ve never programmed with ASP.NET, you’ll find that this book provides a well-paced tour that leads through all the fundamentals, along with a backstage pass that lets you see how the ASP.NET internals reallywork.

The only requirement for this book is that you have a solid understanding of the C# language and the basics of .NET. If you’re a seasoned Java or C++ developer but you’re new to C#, you may find it easier to start with a book about .NET fundamentals before you read this one. Try C# and the .NET 2.0 Platform,Third Edition for a comprehensive introduction or, for a quicker start, read A Programmer’s Introduction to C# 2.0,Third Edition.

Unlike the ASP.NET 1.0 release, ASP.NET 2.0 doesn’t represent the start of a new direction in web development. In fact, almost all the underlying architecture that underpins ASP.NET 1.0 remains the same in ASP.NET 2.0. The difference is that ASP.NET 2.0 adds layers of higher-level features to the existing technology. Essentially, after the success of ASP.NET 1.0, MS poured developers, time, and resources intoplanning and preparing ASP.NET 2.0.

Seeing as they no longer needed to rewrite the ASP.NET engine, the ASP.NET team members were free to be innovative with new controls, create better data management solutions, build a role-based security framework, and even make a whole toolkit for creating portal websites. In short, ASP.NET 2.0 gives developers a chance to relax and enjoy a wealth of new frills designed for their favorite platform. In this book, you’ll learn how to use, customize, and extend all these features.
